Andy Cathcart

It is with a very heavy heart that I type these words. Andy Cathcart - well known to so many of you - was killed whilst out riding in South Africa this week. All our thoughts are with his partner Rona and his family.

I am proud to call Andy a friend. Over the years I have shared riding, racing and a good deal of sweat and bad music as he produced his excellent work in sports physiology. He has my and many others respect for his tenacious and talented skills as a rider.

The tales that will be told are many, he lived life to the maximum and will be sorely missed. I'll sign off with a comment he made whilst racing across Scotland in the multi-day trans-Scotland race a year or 2 ago:

"Line? what line..."

I can only echo your sentiments, it is a great tragedy indeed.

I'm sure Andy will be hugely missed by all of us - he was an inspiration to many of us and his style of riding took no prisoners.

My heart goes out to Rona - there aren't really the right words to say.

Trina and Jon, thank you for calling to let me know of this news.

I will always have fond memories of wincing (in sympathy for the rocks and roots) as Andy glanced his way down lines I never even knew were there.

My thoughts are with Rona and all Andy's friends and family. I'm so sorry.

Andy introduced me to the delights of downhilling on the old golf course trails at Innerleithen more years ago than I care to remember. There was a group of us who used to ride regularly on a Tuesday night round Mugdock and I would always look on with interest as to what new toys he had added to his Red Proflex. He was one of the first folk I ever went night riding with when he was working in Dales. He was a thoroughly decent guy and I was absolutely gutted when I heard the news yesterday. I can't begin to imagine what Rona and his family are going through right now. I'll miss his enthusiasm and the genuine pleasure he conveyed about all things bike and life in general.

Really saddened to have only just heard the news. Andy was an inspiation to us all, we had huge respect for him and loved meeting up with him at Drumlanrig, Inners and Glentress. The nicest bloke you could ever meet and faster than the lot us all, regardless of up, down, fast, technical.
Deepest sympathy to Rona, not much more I can say.
